Simon had some success with persuading her and she was going to introduce herself, but mention of the goblin who got her robbed of everything she hand and thrown on the slave block generates some overpowering emotions here.

Oliver hopped sadly over next to her and put his head in her lap.<br />


"Okay," Simon said. &quot;How about, like, a crossbow or something? It would only have to hold together for two or three shots." He went to sit next to Mizuko and said "You probably shouldn't get into the fight, but if we can douse the shrike with water, are you up to freezing it?"



She shook her head and signed in return, "My power doesn't work the way you think it does. A thin sheet water flash frozen will wake them up or turn them off to sex quickly but will not slow them in the least. You'd have to submerge them and then I'd need to somehow freeze and entire block of ice to immobilize them. But that would also most certainly asphyxiate the victim as well. If you want to freeze someone in place, you must speak with a scion of Winter." She nodded to Less. "Do not worry, Simon. If you and the others cannot handle the creature, I will save you." She smiled at him despite her obvious illness.



"Curse you, comic books! You lied to me!" Simon said, comically shaking his fist at the sky. Then he reached over to hug Mizuko and kiss the side of her head. "Glad you've got our backs."



Mizuko smiled at the contact and kept her face brave despite her situation.



Rey cast her eye over the vines that intertwined themselves along the cliff face. She found one with leaves that clung to anything that brushed against them. With a smile, she grasped hold of one and tried to shape it into a whip. Her first attempt failed, but on her second try, the end of the vine separated from rest, its leaves curling up and becoming like a series of large nodules along its length. She gave it a tentative crack, then smiled.



Rover, on the other hand, was not quite as comfortable with close combat. A footman's lance seemed like an obvious weapons to construct from the materials at hand, but the little gnome wanted better distance from the target. He cast around for the appropriate basics and started putting together a compound bow.



His limited strength and stature would make the archery rig less effective than he liked, but it might let him bring down an airborne opponent in the absence of their net guns. Or, at least he hoped. There were a few magical tricks he could use to maximize the effectiveness of such a crude build. Hopefully it would be enough to do the trick.



le="color:purple;">Okay, let's do some Hedgeshaping! I'm going for a whip that does bashing damage (so I get more attacks with it before it fails), with the hopes that a good enough hit till let me wrap it around part of the vileshrike and hold hold it. If we're lucky, Rey's weight will keep it from flying very far. I'll also spend 4 Glamor to increase the whip's effectiveness.



Rey had some trouble at first with a failed roll and 1 glamour wasted. But the next try worked. I've marked 5 Glamour total spend and you have a whip good for 6 attacks that does +4B.



"color:green;">Sorry for the disappearance - I'm travelling a bit.



Less cursed himself for not picking up the netguns while they were in Rover's workshop not minutes before. He shook his head in mild disgust. "I'll run and get the netguns. Try not to attract its attention until I get back!"



"There is no time left for that," Mizuko said. She pointed at the dark form that had launched itself into the air at the sound of the whip's crack. Even now, the large, winged shape hurtled through the air, gaining altitude as if launched from a canon. It wheeled once, and set itself a course directly over and above the motley's current position.



"Ah well. I figured it wasn't going to just sit and wait for us to kill it," Mizuko concluded.



Less called on his control of the air. Focusing intently on the flying creature he tumbled his arms around in front of him to cause as much downward moving turbulence as he could. The vileshrike's wings were too powerful, though, and it swept through without so much as a shudder.



"Ghaa!" Simon was totally unprepared. He scrambled to his feet and ran to the bag he'd brought with him, digging into a side pocket for his pistol.



The vileshrike hurtled toward the group and Rover took his shot, hurling the spear with all the accuracy he could muster. But his shot whistled past the vileshrike's shoulder and it dove in to rake the gnome, leaving bloody marks in its path. It swept on by with a triumphant screech.



Less redoubled his efforts to ground the hideous bird-thing with a powerful down-draught. ="color:#ff8000;">3 sux this time. Not enough to ground it or prevent an attack but given the titanic amount of effort Less has been pouring into this so far, I will rule it's going to reduce it's flight speed by 6.



Simon triumphantly pulled out his pistol. But as much as he thought it'd be cool to pump hot lead into the monster, he knew he wasn't the best one to try. "Rover, Gun!" he said. Then he sprinted back toward the wounded gnome to let him use the pistol. A mechanical device in Rover's hands was probably going to be a lot more effective than in Simon's.



Simon gave Rover's wounds a cursory look, but decided that the gnome could survive for a little while longer, especially if the others could ground the 'shrike. But if Simon could keep the 'shrike away from Rover, that'd be good. So he invoked his rights under the second clause of Fleeting Spring in a subtle way. Making the 'shrike want to surrender or even just leave would probably be too far from its true desire, but making the 'shrike decide it just had to kill the oh-so-pretty guy with the gold fur... that might work. And maybe Simon would be light enough on his feet to avoid being skewered, sliced, or poisoned. ruled the change of desire was moderate (different target than the vileshrike wanted) but no other modifiers. 3 sux after all modifiers and Resolve removed dice from Simon's dice pool (7 dice left, rolled). Note that the power doesn't disallow the subject from settling other matters that come up first and then continuing to pursue its new desire. But, all things being equal, if nothing more immediate comes up, it will target Simon.



Simon knew his magic must have worked because while the vileshrike shrieked in frustration at the wind storm Less called up, its all too human eyes switched from Rover and Less to Simon.



With a rapid swing of her arm, Rey sent the tip of her Hedge-whip at the vileshrike. "Less, try to force it down into the pond!" If the creature was wet, she reasoned, it might not be able to fly. And the pond was already poisoned, so hopefully dunking the thing won't put the water past reclamation.



e="color:purple;">I ''really' want to hit this thing, so lets spend a Willpower. Hopefully if I get an exceptional success, Rey will have wrapped the whip around part of the vileshrike and captured it. If I'm lucky, it won't be strong enough to fly while Rey's holding onto the whip. If she does manage to snag the vileshrike, she will wrap what she can of the whip around her hand/arm to get a better grip.



If she does succeed in grabbing the thing with the whip, would it be considered grappled?



I was waiting to hear back from Lisa after I noted via Wave that whips can't grapple stuff. It's been a couple days tho, so let's move forward.



Rey's whip crack raked the vileshrike's back and it screeched in pain and rage. It switched it's attention to Rey, but then Rover had an opening for a shot and he took it. Now armed with Simon's pistol, he took aim and squeezed off a shot nice and easy. The only thing that saved it from a swift death was that it was in motion, and it was difficult for Rover to spot vitals amid the muck-encrusted feathers.



Between Less's wind and the pain that Rey and Rover were dealing it plus Simon's distraction, the creature had to make a split second decision to eliminate the one that was hurting it the most so that it could go after the one it wanted the most. It wheeled tightly, dropped to the ground and slashed viciously at Rey. It caught only air. It's Rey's lucky day! It rolled 12 dice and not a single success.



Perhaps it missed because Mizuko was suddenly at Rey's side, shoving her out of the way. "A deal is a deal, changeling," Mizuko told Rey. "I will not allow harm to come to you by your enemies." Mizuko remained standing between the shrike and Rey, pale and shivering, but standing.



="color:green;">I assume Less has to spend his actions controlling the wind to keep it hampered and force it down. I guess he'll follow Rey's suggestion to try to get it in the water - unless he has reason to believe that it would be overly problematic for Mizuko's pond. If he doesn't have to maintain the wind, he will try to use his contract to blind it. Less directed the wind to snatch up debris and water from the pond, wrapping itself in a whirlwind around the creature to inhibit its vision and hopefully misdirect it into the water. The creature staggered toward the edge of the pond under Less's stormy direction.

Simon snatched up Rover's spear and tried to attack the bird-thing. He might not be much of a fighter, but he could at least keep it distracted. A few swift stabs didn't catch the bird-thing, but it did force it another hop toward the water.



Sorry, guys. Life kind of imploded for me. Things are working themselves out, and I'm going to do my best to keep up with the game.



Rey glanced at Mizuko but said nothing; now was not the time to be arguing about it. She lifted her whip and sent the tip flying at the vileshrike. Just a straight attack this time, no Willpower spent.



The gun felt strange and warm in Rover's hand. This wasn't the first time he'd used one, of course, but most of his experience was in development. He'd had rare opportunities to use the weapons for their given purpose. Firing upon another living creature was not a casual even for the gnome.



But it was a tool just like any other. Perhaps a little more primitive and brutal than he was used to, but well suited for the immediate task. He could appreciate that. Sometimes there was little better in life than handling a well crafted implement that was performing its one and only job in life.<br />


Moving only as much as was required to not hit any of the others, Rover lined up for another shot. He continued to ignore the wings and went for another killshot. While the slugs coming from the gun could do a great deal of damage, they'd likely not cause enough destruction to ground the vileshrike. Better to simply exterminate the pest before it could cause any further harm.

    - Description: Hellbound's looks deviate little from a standard hooligan. He appears to be a 25 year old white male with a scruffy appearance, long hair and intense eyes that are typically searching for his next fight. Further, his powers are largely passive and, as such, draw little attention. The only truly strange power he posseses is in his blood, which combusts when it comes into contact with air (that hasn't been processed by his lungs, of course). The flame produced is hot enough to ignite paper and other flamable materials, and should Hellbound be made to bleed enough it can be splashed onto nearby targets. The fumes produced by this flame generates a powerful fear reaction in anyone who inhales them. O'ren does not know why this is, but he has used this to his advantage in the times that his ego draws him into a fight where he's outmatched.
    - He's not a big fan of frivolous costumes or garish masks, though he is trying to fit in with the four-color crowd these days. There's just something about the whole hidden identity that doesn't set well in his mind. Why try to conceal who you are? How can you claim the fame you've rightfully earned if people don't even know your real name or face? Granted, most of the true heroes in the world aren't in the business for fame, fortune or a fair fight, but Hellbound isn't like most heroes.

    - This leads him to work his adventures in civilian attire, and since he does most of his shopping at thrift stores those clothes are hardly the height of fashion. He can be looked at as a scruffy sort of hero with attire that might be more appropriate on low-level flunkies and gang members, but he's not here to look pretty.     - Updated Appearance: Hellbound is eventually granted an artificial pair of wings so as to acheive flight. A suit of black riding leathers (motorcycle jacket and matching pants), with red trim has been adopted over this vest. The jacket itself has vents in the back which snap together at the collar that the wings extend through, and part of the scale vest beneath can be seen in the deep neckline.
    - History: An adopted child, Hellbound never knew where his strange powers came from. His background is largely unknown to him, but other than getting into regular trouble for fighting he's a regular kind of guy. Who happens to bleed fire and can bench press engine blocks...

    - In truth, O'ren is the result of advanced bio-engineering technology. He was born, bred and massively tweaked to produce a powerful soldier by persons unknown. Unfortunately, an attack on his incubation center lead to him being lost to his creators and resurfacing in the outside world. He was discovered as a foundling and eventually put up for adoption. Whether or not any of his fellow broodmates have also found themselves in a similar situation is yet unknown.

    - He had a rocky childhood, certainly. With his carefully crafted love of fighting driving his motivations, it was only natural that he led himself into constant trouble. He quite often was called to task for roughhousing with other kids, most far older and larger than himself as his developing superhuman nature left those his same size as less than a challenge. That's what he continuously sought out, a combative opposition that would force him to push his own abilities.
    - Over time, it became clear to him that mindlessly seeking out brawls would lead to a life of crime and subsequent punishment. While on the one hand, going to jail and making the art of busting heads during a prison riot sounded like a fun way to spend a Tuesday afternoon, he felt that only losers managed to get sentenced for their violence. True winners realized ways to bounce skulls off of the blacktop and make the world think they were doing everyone a favor for it. If that's what it took, then that's what he'd do. He'd take up with the cape-and-cowl set and become one of the world's superheroes.

    - Besides, all of the really rough scrappers tended to be villains. Hellbound always felt a little iffy about knocking around those who thought wearing underwear on the outsides of their tights was helping anyone.

    - Personality & Motivation: Hellbound enjoys physical challenges, particularly fighting. Given his powers and outlook on life, he could have easily fallen into a life of crime and brutality. However, O'ren (as he prefers to be called), is not a bully. In fact, he'll typically step in to protect someone weaker that's being threatened — though this isn't born of some notion of chivalry or fair play, it's just another excuse for him to get into a fight.
    - O'ren has a relatively simple mentality other than his need to fight. There are few distractions in his life, though he does enjoy loud music and heavy drinking as a way to pass the time between action scenarios. He's never taken much time to develop hobbies or long term career plans, and prefers to spend most of his moments in selfish gratification. To him, the world is a pattern of Fight, Sleep, Drink and then seek out another Fight. A true hedonist, at least the young man doesn't waste time denying his own nature. A life of stability never quite drew his attention, and though he'll gladly step in to defend those weaker than himself (which, in his own mind, includes most of the known universe), he doesn't lend himself to charities very well.

    - Complications: His mentality is such that it would be easy to draw him into unwise actions if the chance for a good fight is presented. Though normally level headed and capable of making good decisions, he does overestimate his own abilities and is too much of an action junkie for his own good. He does not, at this time, hold any sort of steady job and a paycheck is rare for him. The majority of income that he does earn typically comes from the amateur fight scene, which he gladly participates in for the practice and the prize if not the challenge.

    - Further, a naive and youthfull mage has decided that Hellbound's oddly empowered blood is a vital ingredient in a potent summoning spell and is currently hunting down the feisty hero to obtain a sample. Though O'Ren really isn't too concerned with this devlopment, as he seriously doubts the magic-punk will be able to take him down anytime soon, it could result in some interesting diversions during more important missions.

    - I'm not how to insert this into the text, not without having to rewrite stuff and affect Mizuko's actions, so I'll just say what Rey would have done. In addition to giving the stuff Simon needed, Rey would have given Mizuko a damp (as in just barely wet) facecloth to bite down on for the pain. Don't want her to drown, but the extra moisture might help with the healing.

    - Simon goes to work on the wound. Extended roll requires 7 successes and he managed it in 5 minutes.

    - there were two things Simon was going to suggest before you fast-forwarded. First, checking to see if there was part of mizuko's shirt in the wound, too. Second, having Less manipulate air to deafen Simon during the surgery. I only care if they would have modified the outcome, though.

    - Naw. I decided against applying any penalties. No particular bonuses as most of the motley was busy holding Mizuko down, but Simon rolled very, very well. He never got less than 1 sux in every roll, even on 3 dice, and even had one roll give 3 sux. Bonus on doing it in only 5 minutes (5 rolls) with only 3 dice to play with (that's 7 sux on 15 dice which is pretty good any way you slice it) — I'm letting Mizuko keep her Seeming Blessing for a little bit yet, which keeps her conscious.

    - 2 sux were generated on his healing roll. I'll assume you downgrade 2 lethal to 2 bashing.

    - Rover doesn't have the Medicine skill, but he can still make a default roll at -3 dice. Even at only 1 die left for his medicine roll, he got a success. So yes he knows feeding her isn't a good idea. If, feeling confident about this, you think Rover would tell her that's not a good idea or have her wait a while before she can have the goblin fruit, go ahead and have him say/do so.

Several things of interest will happen in the Myzuko/Simon scene while the rest of the motley investigates the next. I anticipate then bringing the whole group together again before anything too drastic happens. That is, unless some members decide to do things without waiting or have other ideas/avenues the wish to investigate.
